Choice between ceramic hotplates and induction hot plates. I want the induction one, instant heat
Anyone know the power consumption difference between the two?
I'm sure ceramic top uses more as it needs heating up, while the induction give
instant heat, thus reduced time actually on. But, does it consume more Amps despite?
The price for purchase is pretty much the same, induction a wee bit higher

Which report on hobs
Don't be disuaded by it being a "features" report, it contains good info about induction hobs in comparison to gas/electric - and explains how they work too, and their advantages. Can do a search for other sorts of stuff, but induction is supposed to be cheaper due to only using precise amounts of energy - but can be noisy due to the fact it creates magnetic fields.
Thing to note:
Quote: Induction hobs require ferrous pans (pans which contain iron).
As a general rule if a magnet sticks to your pots and pans, they'll work on an induction hob.
The annoying thing is that if you wish to view their best buys for electric hobs (hotpans = barbque over here according to that site), you have to register. 30 day free trial (supposedly) but it costs too much for full membership, especially since Which reports aren't what they once were.
You can go to their mainpage and search for ovens if you prefer, or any type of appliance. Just note that you can only see the features explained etc until you register - so if you plan on going for a free trial, it maybe worthwhile working out what else you'd like to brush your knowledge up on, and check out what are their recommended in those areas too (dvd players, tv's, cameras, washing machines - anything electrical basically)

yeah, I know about the pans, we only got two now, and they are all worn out anyways so that doesn't really matter

induction ftw...can't see how they would be more energy consuming than ceramic plates - they have much less energy changes....can't beat gas for instant heat and easy to clean, but induction comes close....

plus, as gas isn't widespread in Norway, reconstruction for gas would cost a fortune too.
I'm just looking for a way to justify induction contra ceramic plates not in terms of comfort

It saves energy - mainly as it doesn't waste all that energy heating up first - it's instant and provides heat only to where it's needed (some you can heat parts of the hob "ring" up, and not a whole hob ring - so small pans don't sit with overlapping heated hotplates being wasted.
Therefore you'll be doing your own little bit to combat global warming, saving rainforests and protecting surfboarding hippies from being drowned by huge waves lapping over the thames barrier.
(is that good enough an excuse to get it then? )

Hob: If Gas isnt an option then definitely go for induction over ceramic. I have used both and there is no comparison in my opinion. I'm a gas fan so the instant heat of induction wins every time.
Oven: Electric every time. Get a decent one that is energy efficient and supported by a fan. Cleaner than Gas and less prone to scorching meat.
