Post subject:  dad wants a new pc

basically his base unit is REAL krappy..

but his monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers are fine

Now, dell have a rather annoying habbit of not being able to deduct these features from a PC package, such as the OS, mouse, keyboard etc..
also we'd be happy with XP.. but ooo nooo vista??!

i basically figured... with vista he would want 2GB ram.

he doesn't use his pc for much except work (documents).. listening to music, watching videos etc... i.e. doesn't do anything that would require a beefy pc...especially since he's semi-retired

So i had a look on dell...(boo) and ticked off what we didnt want

here's the total..shockingly.. the VAT and delivery charge = £120!!!!

so...is this standard?
i dont remember paying that amount for delivery and VAT when i got my pc bought and delivered..

so ... what do you guys think is an approp option?

£60 delivery?

Thats got to be wrong......

My components I just bought were free post as over £50 but without free post would have been about £10......

Something wrong there.... :?

^^ I reckon he should get vista. from what i've seen if he's using his comp for music/vid and work then it's a much nicer easier to get around interface.

the game driver issue wont affect him and he probably wants to feel like he has a shiney new toy - i'm guessing he isn't interested in the smalll faults with Vista atm :D If i didnt use my pc soley for games and trillo i'd think the same.

Re postage : ridiculous.

If he wants small why not :

a) stick a processor etc in one of these babies:

http://www.shoeboxcomputers.com/product ... s_id=23408

or,

b) and i know there's gonna be groaning from the crowds, but I have one and they are wicked. easy to install XP on (takes no time and uses supplied software bootcamp)

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects ... lm=Macmini

then he'd have the best of both worlds; the software included with the mini is in my opinion the best, most functional, usable audio / video / photo software i've used. It's seriously small. Outputs DVI come with VGA convertor. You simply hold ALT when you boot to select a different OS - mine is often fixed to load up XP - doesn't ever need to be changed if he hates mac. wont need much ram - 1g would do fine for what he wants - if he's doing it in OSX

Postage definetly shocking, just paid 25 quid for 32kgs to be delivered next day so cant see how they justify that.

Those mac minis are good then eh? Always been tempted by one.

my grandad who is 76 (or maybe older) does all kinds of crap on his pc and once in a while i will get a phone call from him asking,

"how the crap am i supposed to get past that big bugger at the end of the level?"

he is of course reffering to Halo on the xbox

get him XP and bang on DC for him, he's never too old to frag!

if you sly a game on there he'll get tempted to check it out and you'll find out one day that he's an addict :)
