hi
i bought my pc from pc world about 2 1/2 years ago, basically at the moment i have 2 512mb pc2700 memory cards in it,,the problem is i want to get more memory up to at least 2 gigs, but i only have 2 memory slots in the pc,so that means either getting rid of the 2 512`s and getting 2 1gigs or changing,(which i presume is the motherboard, quote me if im wrong as i am only guessing)so that i have at least 4 slots for memory

which would be the best way
new board with 4 slots
or get rid of the 2 512`s and get 2 1 gigs,

also if recommended to change board is that quite easy to do and what board is recommended,,currently have athlon 64 3000+ whatever that is

I'd get a new board.

It'll allow for better upgrades in the future also, then you could still use the 2 x 512's with whatever other memory you get.....I think.

I'm not exactly great at the compatability either.

But a mother board would open up other upgrades in the future also.

also if you got a new mobo you may have to do a fresh install of you OS.

will your current board take 2 gig of ram?

problem is.. your hardware at current may not be compatible with a new mobo.. so u need to find out what socket your CPU is, whether the ram will be compatible, whether your graphics card socket is compatible, is it PCIE?

then buy a mobo based on that info.

also if u plan to just move a HDD to a new mobo.. could have problems.. may require a format..

as soon as it gets to the point where u need motherboard, you may aswell just upgrade pc..

I would say it depends on whether you have a PCI-e gfx card already, if you don't it would be silly to change the motherboard unless you get a pci-e card for it.
Also AMD no longer make cpu's for the socket yours uses, so you wont be able to upgrade much in the future, unless you get a new cpu for your new pci-e motherboard.
You will probably find you need a new psu for that aswell and your O/S wont like all the changes so you will need a new copy of XP/Vista.
So I would say go for the ram and save for the future, DX10 games are round the corner.

subject to you not wanting to go the whole hog and upgrade all - i'd say check the mobo supports 2g of ram then get 2 1g sticks. It's unlikley you'd be able to use your old ram in a new motherboard since ram has moved on ;)

I'd recommend a new board if you can afford it. But it really depends on what you use your computer for... if your a gamer maniac, then a new board definately. But you'll probibally have to do alot of hardware upgrades, so if you take this route, you'd better open your wallet. :(
