Post subject:  New Rig on it's way.

2Gb of memory, 320 Seagate HDD, 6750 Core 2 Duo CPU, DVD re-writer, Antec 500W power supply (60 nicker alone!), X1950 256Mb gfx card and an ASUS mobo that has 1333FSB speed, looks to be an excellent mobo for its price (about 85 quid).

Total was 480 odd quid.

corners were cut:
No CPU cooler (yet, stock one for now), no sound card (on board for now), no new mouse or keyboard, no new tower case. Saved about 120 by not getting cooler, card mouse and tower ;) Maybe later, in that order too :D

Hopefully will have a new PC within 48 hours :)

Finally bit the bullet and put in a buy. The GFX card was only 70 quid, and took the longest to decided upon. Apparently 8600's just don't perform better in game, and since I probs won't install Vista (I do have it, free naturally, educational :D) - seems little point in getting bottom end crap DX10 cards.

The 8800 was just tooooo big a stretch on the finances at this time, so 130 quid cheaper, the X1950 should see me through :)

Hopefully I can finally play X3 in it's best form, play Darkstar One, Space Force Rogue Universe... maybe even Eve once more - oh, and CSS :D
(yeah, space sim freak).

Maybe learning how to shoot again soon, been nearly 18 months since I last played CSS.

(also rebought headphones, they died in one ear last night, so new set with mic attachment :D)

I'm at uni, we've got free:
XP
Vista
Excel
SQL Server
Access
.Net (C++, C#, VB.net etc)

and a horde of other things. It's a Microsoft Academic Alliance thing - the uni pays some money, in return - we get access to software (in MS interest naturally, get us using their stuff - hopefully we will for our full career kind of thing).
I have an login whereby i can download the ISO's and burn to CD.
Not used any yet, but will be going with XP for now I think (i already have a bought copy of it too - but lost the damned CD for now :D)

They may very well do the same, but it's only available to those on the courses... so others at my uni can't get it, only those doing Computer Science - as the department will have probably paid many thousands of pounds for the licensing of it all... or i think they have :D

Can ask at your college in the IT dept, but if you had access to it... they'd have told you ;)

Our cat had to go to the vet the other day - he cost as much as this rig, and he was only in for two days...

Once work pay me the money they owe, and i get 300 quid tax back from previous job as well, then hopefully this will have made zero impact on my finances - so can get cooler etc :D

Of course, if i can't, well - wallet took a pummeling today

when i was in p.c world getting something, i saw someone get a big discount on an OS as they were in 6th form, so if your college doesn't do it then ask at major shops like that if they do. Still better than paying full wack.
