Rightio am gonna be getting a new laptop for uni, only problem is am not sure who to buy from. There's the obvious one Dell but have also been looking at IBM/Lenovo as Strathclyde has a laptop initiative with them. Was also wondering if vista would be worth getting (, ie are there any problems with the OS or if its unstable. Would be mainly used for university work first and foremost, browsing t'internet and gaming (some of the more modern ones) Aye so any advice would be much appriciated, ta :) .

i have a Toshiba satellite L30....great laptop, comes with vista as standard and
although everyone will dissagree i think its great...look beautiful compared to
XP, im not sure how much the laptop costs though as i got it from greatuniversal
on credit soo cost over £600...but if you find it in a better shop it should be around
£500 or less id think. it amzing for surfing t'internet etc, i play CSS on it (can
only manage gg maps though (with around 30-40fps)...unfortunately most of
the maps on gchq server put my fps down to about 9-20 soo can't play)
and i also play bf1942 on medium settings with no lagg at all :D
obviously i dont even know if this one is within your price range, but if it is and
you only want a bit of casual gaming then id deffinately reccomend this or one
of the better ones 8)

Intel core 2 due @ 3.33GHz (1.73GHz + 1.6GHz)
ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M 128mb
446mb RAM
15.4in TFT display

you can find the rest of the details on my laptop (theres tons of versions)

With flatscreens and smaller tower cases, if it's for gaming and sitting in your dorm room - go with a conventional desktop. Can do all you want, cheaper and better.

If it's just, therefore, for taking into uni and working upon - you only need it to run apps that you may want, such as word, excel and maybe a few other proggies.

At that point, bargin basement ftw. Pick up a reasonable laptop for around £350 these days. You won't ever play games on it (or nothing that's not at least 2-4 years old gamewise), but it'd do the rest of the jobs fine.

If it's just for the room, i'd honestly say desktop all the way.

Lenovas (or however they're spelt) have good battery life from what I remember, so if it's for taking into uni it may be worhtwhile checking out whether you can get a longer life battery for the laptops or not?
