Looking for a 500gb External HDD for less than £80. Want something reliable and fast. Used to have a mybook pro but that broke. Wouldnt mind another one but was wondering if there are any better options, maxtor or whatever. Firewire is a good looking option, pros? cons? What is eSATA? Thanks, Seric |

whatever you do; don't buy one that won't actually connect to your pc. That's a seriously bad idea......it isn't even funny to look back on yet. |

external SATA - runs faster than USB2/1394 Looks like a standard SATA plug, only it's shielded. You'll need an eSATA port on your PC though. |

I got a 400GB External USB2 off Ebay last year for £65 quid, its never let me down, Packard Bell store and save. Try something like this : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-External-Port ... dZViewItem Seems good enough And the seller has good feedback |

unbranded hard drive from an ebay shop. I'd rather buy a known name from a proper shop tbh |

Seen seagates and freecoms for around that pprice, both of them work well, got a seagate large hd, and a freecom 2.5" job, seagate actually died when knocked of a shelf whilst running but thats no suprise. Freecom mini drive has a whole collection of dents in its casing and is still working fine. |

Those mini freecoms are great but dont have the capacity you need. Not sure of the quality/durability of the desktop variety. Cant you just replace the hard drive in the myBook or is it all stuffed. Newer Motherboards have e-SATA ports and you can buy add on cards for em as well. |

I'll take another look at it tonight, but from what I could see, there was no screws, and I got to the point of pulling where I had to stop for fear of snapping the case. |

Yeah trippy cables killed mine as well. And also yeah the freecom small ones are to small, and costly for large capacity, but if the build quality is the same oon the larger ones then it should be relaible, the tiny drive has lasted about 3-4yrs of abuse. |
