its the most important part of the PC in terms of build quailty, as its plugged into everything, so if it blows, you may loses the whole PC. And you also don't wan't wobbley voltages
as for the new config, looketh good

made even more canges i've decided to go for a AMD ATHLON 64BIT 3800 (Venice) 512kb L2 Cache (939 pin) instead and gone for a better graphics card the 256MB GEFORCE 7800 GTX PCI express will this be a better set up? Thanks for all your help guys has been great. The website i'm using http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk doesn't tell you the make of the psu buts its the best one they offer for gaming so i trust them .

although it sounds odd, i'd say go for the 3700 not the 3800
the 3700 is only 200 mhz slower but twice the cache
course i could be talking out my arse
couldn't say on the graphics card

The extra 200 MHz will make more difference in games, with the exception of maybe Doom 3 which seems quite dependent on L2 cache.
I got the 3700+ with 1MB cache though because you can't add it to the CPU and I knew it would overclock well too. Plus I do a bit of video encoding too and the cache helps there.

Current processors and gfx cards eat power, hence the need for more powerful PSUs. Especially the case for SLi/Crossfire rigs. Also, it makes for a more stable PC all round.
Good PSUs to buy are Seasonic, Fortron Source, Antec (in that order). Avoid QTEC like the plague....

Don't forget Enermax, in fact I rate Enermax above any of what you put.
And if you're minted a Zippy or PC Power and Cooling PSU take a hell of a beating

EYE see i dodnt know anything about overclocking though and really wouldn't want to mess up the new system so which one would be better the 3700 or the 3800. If you could help me with overclocking i would get the 3700 but i'm still usure. As for the PSU the website doesn't tell you what make it is so would i be best buying it sepperately and add it to the comp latter on? Thanks for all the help

If I personally were choosing between 3700+ and 3800+;
Price gap bigger than £30 = go cheapest
Less than £30 = 3800+

Yeah those games can be cranked right up
Don't install two software firewalls, it will cause you trouble.
AV I recommend NOD32.
Firewall, I use Sygate but that's been bought up by Symantec now

If you buy an nVidia nForce chipset based board you can use the hardware firewall
For games performance you should concentrate on the gfx card, followed by the RAM, then CPU.
I wouldn't recommend buying less than a GB of RAM tho.
EDIT: Your spec looks fine to me
