 Post subject: any ideas??
Post Posted: Sat Apr 22, 2006 10:34 am
I'm trying to Defrag my C drive. Everytime I try I get this come up which is stopping me from doing it:-

"Disk Defragmenter has deteched that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume (C: ). Please run Chkdsk/f."

Trouble is I can't find nothing that is scheduled to run, and when I have try to run it, it goes in to a DOS window searches a few files and then ends. but I still can't Defrag. I have tried switching off and starting again but no joy.

Anyone have a clue what this is about?

right click the C: drive, Properties, Tools, Error Checking.
Tick the top box, press OK.

You will get a message about exclusive access. Say yes and reboot.
Don't skip the disk-check when it reboots.

This will allow you to defrag the drive when it's done.

If you are going to defrag it, download an demo copy of Diskeeper and use that. Its the full version of the Windows defrag, and will work better.
For the best defrag, schedule a boot-time one, this can take a couple of hours to run though.

System Mechanic 6 is an amazing program for keeping your compsky tidy and fast. Round about £25, and it does everything.

This normally happens to me if i forget to disable the screen saver and power management stand by stuff. Once I disable them its fine :)

right I have run A cmd command and its seems I have what is called a dirty flag on my C drive. So I can't defrag the drive until disk check has run and cleared the dirty flag. Problem being I can't get Chkdsk (diskcheck) to run??! I have also tried canceling the Chkdsk which i thought would of allowed me to run a defrag, but I'm guessing that my computer has scheduled a Chkdsk and that is held some i can't find so i can't turn the dam thing off. If anyone has any idea or has had a problem like it could you please help, I have been sat here for 5 hours pullin my hair out on this one.

the /f is Fix so for example you can run a command like :" chkdsk c: " would run a diskcheck whereas "chkdsk c: /f" would run a check and fix any errors

yep try that, and it kinda of works as in you can get the diskcheck to work because it automatically does it from safe mode, the problem is it doesn't really fix it it just bypasses it for 1 time. So after you ran a defrag the problem returns. But I have a plan I have hatched with my mate ( who does really work for our namesake, Sshhh ;)) and he has an idea to find the problem. so as soon as we get to the bottom of it I will post it here just incase anyone else runs into the same thing :)

Sweet found it, Problem solved :)

We have now found the problem and solution, thankfully only took 7 bloody hours lol. So if anyone else has this problem and they also have "Spyware Doctor" you may want to try this first but routing all around you pc files and the net for an answer, cause it is probably this at fault.

If you have spyware Doctor 3.2 and have upgraded to spyware doctor 3.5 you will find that you won't be able to get Chkdsk (or chdntfs, same thing) to work. This is because of a file in spyware doctor called "ikhlayer.sys" which conflicts or blocks the diskchecker (Chkdsk) from booting befroe windows starts up. Here's what to do:

Exit from spyware doctor ( by right clicking on the spyware doctor icon in the taskbar menu near the clock on the right hand side, and clicking on exit)

Find and delete the file "ikhlayer" in diver folder which is got to through c:\windows\systems32\drivers

now come out of that and empty your recycle bin.

goto run (in the start menu, on the bottom left hand side of your screen) and type in:-
cmd
to bring up a systems32 window (dos window) (which is a black screen in a box for those who don't know:) )
now type: Chkdsk c: /f /r
then restart your pc. Problem solved :) Now you can run a Defrag.

P.s you may have to wait sometime when you reboot for the Diskchecker (Chkdsk) to run through, it depends on how many files in have on your pc. In my case it took about 2 hours with having 312,000 files on my pc. just let it run through.
