Its roughly the same in the end, but if you build it yourself you can make it how you want. Like you can overclock and upgrade without Dell's mobo having a hissy fit.

If you build your own, personally see if you can wait till AMD releas the AM2 socket CPU's. I reckon we are on the verge of a new hardware "generation" thing:
    AMD's AM2 socket
    Intels conroe processor
    Windows Vista
    Direct X 10 cards

If you buy a PC now, it may not be up to scratch for the new DX10 games. Plus you wont be able to upgrade as much. Even the best DX9 cards in SLI wont beat a DX10 card with new features (like that triangle shader thing).

Yup, all of which will prob be some stupid price like £1000 a piece.

New technology is hella expensive!

Just done a bit of work on mine but next step is a dual core AMD and one of those Asus Crossfire boards. I feel the need to double up on my X1600 ATi Xfire grfx card. Self/Home built is way better than an off the shelf unit because they use Main board that have sound, grpfx on board and these can be a pain if you decide to add you own grfx or soundcard at a later date. Also the performance of these board can be somewhat lower than a good after market board such as Asus and Abit.

Asus make the best mobo's, ive been told over and over by many different people, theyre not the cheapest on the market but a cheap motherboard will make the most expensive of components run like poo.

But you can disable on board sound and gpu's usually in the bios, if not in the device manager. I have to say that my ellete new mobo has ob sound and its not awful, my M-audio 410 pci card doesnt support 64bit, doh! Does anyone still make pci sound cards, that are up to date with 64bit?(the words 'Creative' 'usb' and 'firewire' are outlawed :D )

Go for it, mate, if you do get a mobo with on board sound or gpu just make sure you match the cpu/gpu/ and ob chipset, dont mix ati with nvidea, or Intel with Amd, then u'll be fine.

Mebe the hardware forum needs a few 'Community suggested gaming setups', if we take some of the best systems and make 3 suggested setups, perhaps a high, med and low price range with lists of components, driver update links and assembly instructions. That way when looking into a new system people can homebuild but around a well tested, designed and fully compatable machine. Id be prepared to help, n e one else interested?

(oh and 3jorn, eat my pixcells :P)

yes 'The beast MKI' was origionally dsigned as a recording/mixing rig (home project studio), hence the rediculous amounts of storage and M-Audio 410 and Audiophile 24/ 96 synced up :D... My mixing desk is a little dusty these days tho :? .

I know a vj who wants some audio doing in the summer tho so who knows mebe ill get orf me ass and do something

Ive only done 1 recording this year i think, at an event in manchester, that i also had to simultaniously video, so my main pc has just been used for cutting shoddy video clips and even shoddier live recordings.
(play a few games on her too   )

What kind of stuff do you do?

well when better sytems have been used, to the point that theyre proven to be reliable and well supported, could easily do 3 machines each year.

It sounds like a pain in the arse, but all we need is 3 machines that perform well, relative to their prices, with descriptions of the components and a standard installation guide with a coupla piccies.

1.AMD 'Uber Gaming' Setup (£1000 +)

2.Intel 'Reliabilty Gaming' setup (£600-800)

3.Amd 'Lite gaming' setup (£500 -700)

Perhaps? Or mebe an Intel and an Amd for each price bracket

Since Amd really perform at the high end whereas at a mid range Pentiums can be more reliable and hot little amd for a cheap gaming setup.

all sorts really. have just finished building a studio which was pretty hard work! recently recorded an argentinian/catalonian band, but make my own stuff which varies from deep murky US house, through afrobeat, 70s synthy prog rock (lol) to chilled beats:)

I may make a post with some links to stuff. conscious this is off topic!
