I have a 1mb cable line, I'm usually lucky to get 150kbs.
Jeebus know what it was on when it first started, I noticed at 3000kbs... and now it's at 180kbs.
Never noticed anything like this before, some kind of error?

kiloBITS or kiloBYTES? big difference...
1 Kilobyte (KB) = 8 Kilobits (Kb)
150kb x 8 = 1200KB so over 1 meg....
TEST UR CONNECTION HERE
as for the drop its something to do with windows pre-fetching i think... the "3000" you saw is how much its precached when u hit OK.. windows thinks its done that much in one sec so claims it as a speed!!! it drops as the speed 'averages out' as your download runs... its not actually getting any slower...
its odd that far into a download to see that high a figure.. did you wait an age before 'saving to' ? like go make a cup of tea then come back?

Got 8.2mb here but be prepared for about a week of dodgy connections, something about BT optimising your line and this is how long it takes. I had about 4 days of nuttyness but all is awesome now. 30mg file in about 14 seconds then again I am only about 200yrds from the exchange and only 10 people have BB in my village. UberConnection ftw.

1040.3 Kbps
127.5 K bytes/sec
So thats perfectly normal...
When I was watching it download though, the MB's downloaded really fast, and it slowed down as the connection speed dropped. Plus it took a hell of a lot longer to download the rest, than that bit (Well a hell of a lot longer than it would've if it had been the same speed).

The reason is firefox. Basically when you click on the link to start the download it starts getting the file straight away, however it takes firefox a bleedin age to open the download window, therefore when it does it measures the x mb that youve downloaded against 1 second giving you a ridculously (and untre) mb/s speed, however on larger downloads the average is cancelled out as the file is downloaded leading the the truest speed reading at the end of the file (btw ie is no better at this )

ahhhhhhh never knew that, I will now stop being disappointed when my downloads decide to slump from initial speeds of 260kbps lol.

Lo mate,
BT would you belief, though as above, I can go to the end of my road and virtually throw a stone at the exchange
