Hi guys,

i'm not too good with computers so this may seem like a really stupid question but i could really do with some help.

A while ago i clicked some link on MSN 7.5 (a version i downloaded) that had come from some weird virus thing and when i did McAfee brought up a message about a suspicious script - so i click 'stop this script'.

And after that every time i startup windows an alert comes up saying:
'The file C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtmymodjqh\csrss.exe contains suspicious scripting activity and has been stopped' - so i click 'stop script' every time it comes up, which is every time i startup windows.

also, sometimes (not everytime) i start up windows, windows messenger (the versio of MSN preloaded on my PC when bought) automatically opens, even though it is set NOT to do - i never actually use it, i use the 7.5 version i downloaded later.

More worryingly, this message has come up twice:

'Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions. To maintain system stability windows must restore the original versions of these files

Insert your windows XP home edition service pack of 2CD now.'

i click 'cancel' and then 'yes' to keeping these unrecognised versions...

To add to all this - McAfee virus scan has stopped. I can still scan for viruses when i command it to, but the constant protective scanning thing won't activate, when i try to get it to it says:

'Some components of ActiveShield are either missing or might not have been installed properly. Please reinstall ActiveShield' - there's an extra bit about safe mode but its irrelevant

Anyway, when i scanned for viruses when i realised i had been online without virus scan enabled it said a 'trojan' was auto-cleaned from the system. And after a reboot all the problems i've mentioned are still going on.

I was wondering what your advice would be, i know that a lot of you work in computing and i'm often in awe of how much you guys know, so i figured if i should turn to nyone, it be you guys.

thanks in advance.

peachy.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtmymodjqh\csrss.exe is a virus.

I don't know which virus you have, but you could follow these instructions substituting svshost for csrss (sure it's not crss.exe?) etc:
http://www.computing.net/security/wwwbo ... 16820.html

or format, nothing like a nice clean pc, it's just like new :P

Sounds like you have a particularly nasty virus.
Either find specific details to remove it on the net....or do as suggested above.

Also, not all virus' are gone just because ur virus software said so.
Some are designed to hide, and repsread after you think you;ve gotten rid of it

what Natt said is correct.

check to see if u have two csrss.exe files on your comp

the legitimate one is in System32 folder, it should not be in any other folder or subfolder. if it is its a virus.

Try this:
open your task manager.
you should have two processes named csrss.exe.
The proper(essential proccess) one...and the virus one.

Stop the virus one in your processes...then try getting rid of it using your virus software. If you try it...make sure to stop the correct one :wink:it might not come back if u stop the process beforehand.

You could also try stopping the process...and deleting the file manually

thanks for the responses guys. but i've got all the stuff i wanna keep on DVD now so i can just pop it back on after reinstalltion.

my only worry is what happens to my steam account - will i still be able to use it after the reinstall?

(possibly a stupid question, but better be safe than sorry)

I simply just reinstalled Steam, and remembered my account details.

it may have taken nearly 5 hours (:x ) but it's done and dusted - and steam was fine - thought it would be disastrous, i guess its got a bit of a bad rep - nyway, thanks for the advice, it saved me the cost of a phone call to some ridiculously overpriced software experts :D

gar, I hate reformatting. I'm going to have to do one soon, got crap loads of spyware and popups :/ that spyware programs dont detect.

Plus in general too much stuff accumulated, like this for instance was just in my desktidy folder (basically I put everything in there when my desktop gets too crowded):

I mean I dont even know where it came from lol :D

Anyway, good to see your comp's up and running again :)

I didn't do that because my CS:S became feked when I changed from a Nvidia to ATI card. So the it would probably still be feked up afterwards if I copied and pasted. I downloaded it again and the game was smooth as fek. But that was me.
