ive just had another look at my processer speed and it is 1.7ghz it says on the box and all sites that sell my processer that it is suppose to be 2.2ghz. what has gone wrong? can i fix it?

Dude it looks (possibley) like the mobo isn't recognising the chip correctly, X2s can be detected as "Unknown Hammer" cores by old bioses. In this case it would (reasonably) select a lower fsb to "protect" the chip. Have you tried "cpuz" (google "cpuz" for the download) if this reports anything other than a "Manchester" core then updating the BIOS is the first port of call. However don't take this lighty, you must have exactly the correct Bios file and if it goes wrong it may leave the PC unbootable (un'post'able). Once it is running correctly find a good overclocking forum. Those guys are very experienced, I am more happy overclocking than teaching overclocking. Theres no reason why you 4200 X2 couldn't eventually reach 2500MHz on the stock cooler but this may take 50 - 100 tweaks and reboots to get right. Slowy slowly catchy monkey.

....or you might havbe cool'n'quiet enabled, which lowers the chip speed when you're not using it for much. When you're gaming it ramps up the speed again ;)
