tried to connect a new router to my sisters laptop.

it's a 54 mpbps netgear wireless WGR614 v6

i just tried the same setup as i have got here at home (Netgear DG834 Router going in via ethernet), and the LED's aren't showing on her router..

:?

Her normal broadband modem works BT (1mpbs)

I took her router home to my house to see if i could get it to work, i tried just switching wires around from my router to hers.... still no LED for internet, only the power button and the ethernet port, tried tapping into 192.168.0.1 and it won't respond...??

don't know how to diagnose the problem, any suggestions?

Don't suppose i badly advised her on a router? i'm not really sure about the difference between standard wireless routers and ADSL wireless routers i just told her to get any.

Or maybe its a faulty router, landline etc.

also, If you just have the router plugged in with the phone line + ADSL filter and power, it should show an internet connection LED right?
(hers isn't, even from mine)

Tried to factory reset the router?

When its plugged into ethernet, start > run > cmd > ipconfig /renew *

then typin in ipconfig /all to get the default route (which is usually the router ip for the web control panel).

sounds like a faulty router really.

If you move the ADSL cable from yours into hers, you should see the ADSL LED.
Likewise, you should be able to ping it.

Connect your PC to her router via a cable.
Hold in the reset button on the back of the router for 15 seconds or so, until you see the LEDs flash as it selftests.
Try ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew
If you don't get a 192.168.0 address it's buggered.

If you do, try ipconfig /all - the DHCP server mentioned will be the router.

my router needs the cable to be jigged around before it works-try pushing it into the back if leds dont come up.

Try a diffrent ethernet port? Factory reset router? BTW your dsl light might not come on if your new router dosent have your authentication details in?

it's bust... no config error will stop the LEDs coming on.

He says the power led comes on, I checked the docs for both routers and they have the same power supply.

The only reason I can think of the sister router not showing connectivity lights would be wrong authentication details. Also I guess that you might be able to disable ports to stop ethernet leds appearing (unlikley) or maybe its just a duff ethernet port in which case try another one (also unlikley). Additionally is your PC set to a fixed IP for your router or are you using DHCP? (Factory reset should set the ip address to be 192.168.1.1 so if your on a different manual addressing scheme you will need to change it). If all that failes then GenP is right, its knacked! :D GL.

For ref the two manuals...

Lol i diagnosed the problem today

the router that she bought, you are supposed to plug the modem into it....

how stupid is that? the router does not have an actual modem inside it!!

apparently you're just supposed to use the router to broadcast the wireless signal...

anyway i've told her to exchange it for a different model

didn't really know they existed :? ...

thanks for help anyway
