I have a large quantity of files (9GB) between 5mb and 200mb on a computer with no DVD-RW which I want to transfer to my new computer. I've tried sending them over the network through my crappy switch, but any file larger than about 20mb freezes and wont transfer.

What am I doing wrong?

And no, its not pron :roll: :P

Oh its also doing it for large picture files (>800K ish)

I don't have an external HD, except for my 10GB Zen and I don't want to kill the HDD by taking all the music off and on again etc

It's odd about the freezes. I shall make some assumptions, you are using windows simple file sharing, no passwords to log onto the PC. Both PCs have network cards built into the motherboard and the new PC is fairly recent, then there is a good chance it has an Autosensing crossover built in.

If this is the case you can (temporarily) simply connect a cat V cable between the two nics and let windows on both machines use a 169.x.x.x address, if they both cannot find a dhcp server they should do this automaticaly. Then the transfer can be done at the fastest speed allowed by the slowest nic and bypass the switch. This may help if the switch is causing the problem (you mentioned it's crappy) and is simple to try.

Could someone make corrections / additions to this if necessary.

Options :

1) Buy a new switch, if your pc's are close then use a crossover cable?

2) Buy a dvdrw - approx 25 - 30 quid here.

3) Put the hard drive with the data in your other computer and copy it a cross.

you can try FileZilla, but for file transfert through ftp you need of an ftp server program too. So, you need to download both version of filezilla;

server version and client version.

here all the details:

httxp://sourceforge.net/project/showfil ... p_id=21558

Filezilla are nice, especially if you set it to only login once at a session :wink: :wink:
