Get XP
XP-64 is just a waste of time imo. Difficult to get drivers to work, cant really do much more compared to XP. Plus with vista on the horizon, you should just wait for that if you want a 64-bit OS. Its going to have alot more driver support and it'll be a whole new OS.

Still not ordered this due to lack of immediacy on dad's part.
Looking back at beefy's spec now the ram is sold out, and im thinking the Mobo is a bit expensive for what i need.
So can i get some help with what is compatible/value for money
i want to keep the mobo under £110 inc vat and ram under £120.
So here's what im looking at currently
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=309535
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
£55.01
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=314763
Seasonic S12 Powersupply 500W, 120mm Fan, 4xSATA, ATX/EPS, SLI, 20/24pin
£89.01
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=314089
NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x, Dual, Silver OEM
£25.50
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=304339
Antec P160 Miditower, Silver, Side window, (Without PSU)
£69.00
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=320784
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz Socket AM2, 512KB, BOXED w/fan
£65.01
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=122785
Corsair TWINX2048-3200 DDR-DIMM 2048MB Kit w/two matched CMX1024-3200 DIMMs
£132.00
(is this ram ok for my mobo / value for money ?
-----------------------------
beefy's mobo recommendation
ABIT Fatal1ty AN9 32X, nForce 590 SLI, DDR2, Socket-AM2, 2xGbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex16
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=322045
£147.00
Other motherboards recommended by pingu
MSI K9N SLi Platinum
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.a ... turer_id=0
£ 93.44 inc VAT
Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.a ... turer_id=0
£ 107.23 inc VAT
one of my own
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=322039
ABIT KN9 SLI, nForce 570 SLI,Socket-AM2, DDR2, 2XGbLAN, Firewire, ATX, 2xPCI-Ex16
£102.00
-----------------------
XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3 PCIE Dual DVI
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=40YQ
£180 inc vat
that would come to a total of £717 with my own choices made above (without monitor which i'm not sure i need to worry about anymore)
I don't understand how to look for compatibility fully with pc's so i'll leave that to those who know what they're looking for.
Any components which are now updated and are better value for money?
For example amd processors i can now see there is.
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=320786 at £80
Thanks.

and why spend £150 on case and mobo, when the antec sonata II (which is nearasdammit silent and very cool (in both senese)) is only £80, including 450W PSU (which runs the specs you have fine)
but I would reccomend not getting the MSI mobo if you get the antec sonata II, as its not the best fit (works fine, but the cooling duct don't work, and the 24 pin ATX power cable is a bit of a squeeze)

thanks.
rite ok im gonna go for the sonata 2 case then, and that will help cut the cost of the PSU and i think that will help cut the overall cost a lot, + i like the style of case a lot more.
Is the mobo i have suggested suitable/value for money?
What ram suggestions should i get if its ddr2? I guess i can splash more because of the cuts of cost from the psu.
Perhaps also i can get better processor, can anyone find me a better deal on a processor than the one i have for £65? I'm sure there are.
My spec now comes down to £511 with everything except ram.

corsair xms ddr2 matched pairs....bit more pricey, but only £15/£20 per GB, and should be worth it.
mobo looks good and will work fine with the sonata II cooling vent, and atx power lead
570 chipset > 550 chipset (what i have =[ )

if you want faster memory (makes little differnce)
1 gb is £86, 2gb is £150
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=308713
and
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=312054
^^ though the latency on those is a higher (5) than the others (4), which probs cancles out the diff in clock speed...
besides which, you can just overclock the FSB
