trying to print from my pc via my dads pc, using a USB to printer connection

works fine on my dads, just how to connect to it on the network as it is not showing when i search for it, it is set to shared in my dads printer settings/ control panel so i don't know why it doesn't find it.

Are you both on the same workgroup (MSHOME or whatever)?

Also, if hes running a diff version of windows, you'll need the drivers for that version on your PC. Actually, you'll need the drivers anyway i think.

Does the printer appear in your "my network places"? Make sure file and printer sharing is on at your PC too.

find the computer name of your dads PC.
On yours, click start, run and type in \\PCNAME

Press enter - this will show all shared resources.

If not, unshare it, apply changes, and re-share it, then look at what stuff he is sharing again.

mwaha i did it a different way

i connected to his area, using shortcut via network ip

then i double clicked the printer (which was showing then)
and then it installed it etc..so worked

You are supposed to click and install it

XP usually auto-detects and auto-installs network printers though - don't know why yours didn't
