Well, I think my computers life is drawin near to a close, it's served me for quite a few years, so it can damn well server me another!
It's just I'm getting really low FPS on the new games coming out and average on oldens. The thing is though I don't have a job yet and hence no big budgets for a new system or a major upgrade, so what would be the major quick fix to improve the system below?
AMD Anthlon XP 3000+ (2.2GHz)
1 Gig of Ram
6600GT 256mb GFX Card
Thermaltake (470) PSU
No sound card..I'm not sure what the motherboard is but it's an old Asus socket A, 1 AGP slot, 2 Ram slots to support up to 2 gig of Ram.

That does sound good.
What will you be using it for?

For a quick fix, get anothe gig of ram, and a better gfx card.
Ideally you want to move aaway from an AGP mobo though

For a gaming machine it's served me well.
Problem with PCI-E though, I would need a new mobo, new processor, and a new GFX card, and possibbly a new case for it to fit in...leaving that option pretty impossible.
The Rams a pain because that would mean buying 2 x 1 gig sticks..leaving 2 x 512 sticks unused (I hate wasting stuff)
And as for the GFX card, well it's AGP leaving limited options.

you can get 7x00 cards for AGP, 7600 would be best value for agp
processor could probs be upgraded, and they are dirt cheap nowadays

the deliberate spelling mistake indicative of a pirate's lack of education?

Nothing deliberate there china. I've not spelt mutinus since the days I was tried for refusing to have sexual relations with Fletcher Christian.

Sooo close, perhaps mutinous?
The card sounds good, it worked last time when I upgraded from a 9200 Radeon to the 6600GT. But all I seem to find is the PCI-E versions.
As for the processor, I have no idea where you could get Socket A....maybe in a museum.
Forgot to say my Ram was PC2700 184 Pin, one stick came with the computer and the other was a cheapo Novatech brand bought from Novatech. I know people sell stupid stuff on Ebay, but I can't think of anyone who would want a couple of year old mismatched cheapo sticks.

No point upgrading your CPU, you won't get much better on Socket A. Graphics card and RAM will be your best bets. httttttttttp://www.overclockers.co.uk/a ... Cards.html (note, I don't actually recommend OcUK, just have a good selection) all decent cards, just remember that buying something too powerful will be wasted on your PC as the CPU will be causing a bottleneck.
You could try upgrading the motherboard to one of those ASRock ones that have both AGP and a PCI-Express slots, and a 939/AM2 processor then upgrade the graphics card later on since there's not a whole lot wrong with a 6600GT anyway tbh.

I heard you could now get 6800Ultras for peanuts now! Could be a descent upgrade if you can find one.

Wow thanks RD, I'd be very apprecitive if you could, RD components FTW!
Just on the look out ofr those GFX cards mentioned, I'm just wondering what would make more difference, another gig of Ram or another card?
Oh, and does anyone know which ATi cards are better? I used to use them but I've forgotten the product names after the 9800.

Well ive been looking at my pc recently for an upgrade, £89 for a 7600GT
£60 quid for a 3700 procesor and 60 quid for 1 gig or ram if you would spend maybe £60-70 quid on a mobo it might be a better pc, upto youself mind. Total cost would be £300 max.
Edit the card is pci-e aswell i reckon this could be a good buy for yourself
