There is 2 ways to format a harddisc:
Partition index removal
Removing all data, from the disc.

If you just want to reinstall windows, and have a clean start, both works fine. The difference is the time it takes. The first is way faster.

The last is useless. You need a magnet of 10.000 kilo's, to remove data so you cant read it again

If your computer get worse from it, it can be because:

Your disc is broken, and a full removal(THe last option) maybe made the state of the disc worse.

Or you did something wrong.

Cant quite say, your post is very thin.

boot XP disk.
choose install, not repair.
when it mentions partitions, you will get an option to delete.
delete them.
create a new partition.
format it as NTFS (not a quick format)
carry on installing.
any more problems at this point will be hardware

i was told that you should do it this way by someone else, he said this way rather than the other way.. don't know why

boot from xp disc
go in to recovery console (r)
type in
format c: /fs:ntfs
After that has finished do a check on the hdd via this cmd:
chkdsk /p

im not sure if this method is any different whatsoever to the format NTFS gui method (not quick)

it happens when i am installing. it goes through the first disc fine. then i put in the 2nd disc and it works till it gets to 95% and then it says it cant find a file of somekind... then it closes.
