I was thinking of this article at the time :)

ITWeek: What OJ can tell you about your OS

"Somebody working in the fruit juice business is a genius. I have no idea who. But somebody worked out that putting “juicy bits” into packaged citrus drinks was a win-win-win situation. Leaving in the little fragments of indigestible cellulose membrane made customers believe that the drink was better, because it looked more like what comes out of an orange at home...To my mind, both [vista and Mac OSX] operating systems show a lot of juicy-bit thinking – a lot of the innovation is there to make people think things have improved, rather than to actually make a real difference."

It then goes on to quantify just why they offer very little in the way of genuine innovation. Things really haven't moved on since the 60's tbh :?

With the number of hardware changes I tend to make and the "2 major changes only please, before you need to buy a new copy" activation rule, this could get exxxpensive.
