Go through add/remove programs and remove anything you don't use....

Go through running processes, find processes that are hogging memory that you don't use/need, and remove the exe that launches them....

Do a defrag.

Start/Run then type msconfig. Check the startup option to see if there is anything starting up that isn't neccessary.

Check background proceses in the task manager.

Get rid of any programs you dont ever use

Try also downloading ccleaner, thats quite good at getting rid of all the junk programs leave behind, after they have been removed stuff like that.

Defragging your harddrive, tbh never noticed it give a massive boost in performance but couldt hurt. Go to My Computer, right click on one of the drives, then choose tools/ defrag. Run that for the drives.

Reformatting can be a pain in the neck, and I dont think a OS should need to keep being re-installed. Sometimes its easier than doing anything else, but for the most part I just think its a waste of time.
All your doing is reverting it back to its clean state without all the stuff you'd normally be running on it, and then installing all of that again.

check for spyware just incase..
run a virus scan aswell

it is just inevitable that windows gets pretty slow eventually with all the krap that can end up installed on your pc, which is why people sometimes format and reinstall windows

The other question is, is it really slowing down or are you just too used to it?

Have you been near a faster more expensive pc lately? That always makes mine feel poo when I go back to it.

If you can answer yes to the last question, just wear blinkers everytime you go near someone else's pc, unless it is an old piece of poo that is still running windows 95 or linux or something.

Problem solved hopefully :D
