Which is better?
2GB (1GB stick x2) of DDR running at 400MHz, or 4GB (1GB stick x4) of DDR clocked slower by the system at 333MHz....?
I want my system to last for a couple of years at least.

Ofc. that is DDr2 right?
But id go for the 4gb tbh.
Often the bottleneck in system is the HDD. So 77mhz often does little difference.
But with Vista comming up, you will need at least 2gb.
4 is nice.
BUT!! You will need a 64bit operative system

Are there any games which need >2GB with 32bit OS? doubt it. Suppose 64Bit OS would need 4 though. what OS do you want to use with it, sooner of later it would be vista 64 so think about that. Tough one to call at the moment

And you expect that system to run for several years, with DDr1?
I would upgrade to DDr2 if i were to get new ram.

Meh board (ASUS A8N32-SLI DELUXE) will go up to 4GB which should easily suffice for 2 years. I'm going to be running w2k3 x64 on it and playing with VM's, so perhaps I should splash out on 4GB after all....
It's got a 4000+ in it, although a dual core jobby would prolly make more sense long term
If anyone is interested in 939 chips, some current offers out there:

yes, in as far as the wording goes, but i actually stole it from somewhere else something to do with that defcon game
back on topic
those chips are worth getting, if you are in the market for one that is
just recently oc my 4400 to 2.42Ghz (2.2 standard)
20% in the bios (mobo ASUS A8N32-SLI Premium) and an extra 10% using the AI booster app................
so far so good

Seeming as you wanna go for W2k3 and play around with VM Ware, I'd say the 4GB option.
While on the subject of RAM, which is more worthwhile or not really worth bothering about
2x 1GB DDR2 PC6400
or
4x 512MB DDR2 PC6400
or do would you look at is as... if one chip goes, you have another 3 as backup? o.o
