Why would this take approx 20 seconds to do every DNS lookup?

It's the same on both wired and wireless, using a DCHP assigned DNS and gateway.
The lookups are instant if I reboot to Vista though, so I guess it's not my router.

I've decided to bite the bullet and get using *ix again, but it's making it pretty hard to use.

And a KDE quesion - how do I make the desktop icons smaller?

Are you running a dns server locally?
Whats the dns server set to in your ifconfig?

At home just my router for DNS.

It's the same if I take it to work and point it at the DNS servers on the LAN too.

I've tried it with DHCP and static settings :|

At last...one that I can answer! :D

Right click desktop -> Properties -> Appearance tab -> Advanced button -> Under "Item" Select "Icon" -> Change number :D

You can do all sorts with that advanced appearance pane that you wouldnt think of in a million years. Or need...
