Ok, so laptop.....not going to happen.
One I wanted I can no longer get, and I'll get batter value with a desktop anyway.


It's desktop building time......advice needed.

Righto, time for what I need.


I'm after a computer for about £600-800, needs to be capable of playing games well(no lag for css etc), internet, photoshop, downloading, etc etc etc.

Surely not that hard?

I would like to get an Athlon Processor......however are Intel Dual Core's not the best thing at the moment?

Needs to have good graphics, I want to actually play games without lag....it'll feel soooo good.

Harddrive capacity would be a nice touch, doesn't need to be big but enough to keep me content until I can get some big storage sorted.

DVD rewriter/drives needed, not bothered about floppy drive (poor keen )

Fans of course

Nice motherboard that leaves future upgrades possible

Memory (1gb+ , the more the better)

Power Supply (go on bilbo say it, I know you want to)

Case, perferably a nice looking one.....plain cases are just wrong on gaming machines.

Pritty much a brand new system.


I was looking at this system on overclockers, can you beat it?

Discussion on vent and I think the opinion was that the graphics card ain't the greatest?

Bilbo dont say it, Antec suck.. I had on for a year and a bit and it broke.. its actually rather noisy too.. when i was talking to a few people today they said that they find them noisy.


but yeah that system doesnt look to shabby

besides, a warranty of one year usually means a MTBF of one year, so it did OK anyway

- NEC 7170 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) Its a DVDRW - what can you say
- OcUK GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) Ehhh....home brand graphics card - you will need a new cooler if you go for this
- Seagate 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache Small and low cache. also, you want a samsung...FTW
- Antec NSK4400 Case WOOT. Not the nicest looking, but who cares, its antec
- Antec 380W PSU Too small, will limit upgrades. 450 is a bare minimum, and see if you can get modular (think of the 4 pin/8 pin CPU power connecters for C2D - that nearly caused a BIG problem when I upgraded
- Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Home Edition No vista?


Basically, build your own, its the only way of getting exactly what you want.

Antec 550W PSU modular ~ £65
Chose your own mobo, very important part, read lots of reviews, but about £60
Intel C2D 6300 ~ £110
2GB Corsair XMS ~ £110
7900GS w/ Zalman cooler ~ £120
Add £100 for storage (samsung spinpoint about £60, dvd drive)
About £50 for a Case
And however much the 'doze is (60 or 70 for xp/vista)

= about £675

Got those prices/specs of ebuyer, they tend to be cheapest and have uber return policy (send it back, they don't give a banana, they just give you money ). I mean it with the mobo - check all the review sites cos some of them have real odd quirks (like some cards not fitting etc) and of course you have to chose intel or nvidia chipset

Sensible advice from 8ball, though I wouldnt recommend getting vista if you play a lot of games. The drivers are rubbish and I have had a total of 8 BSOD in the past 5 days playing CSS, Test drive and C&C3. Mainly caused by the beta creative drivers but a couple from nvidia.

Ok well I can either got for a £600-800 computer now...........or I can wait until April when I should have another £500 or so to spend. (I'll get a fair bit from Tax back, and I'll have a few more weeks worth of wages)

Hmmm decisions decisions.....

Having played games with unbelievable lag for the past who knows how many months, a few more weeks won't make that much diffrence.....

with another 500 you could gentleman out the graphics (either 8800 or sli (blegh)), or you could spend teh whole £500 on a better processor - the E6*00 series are all the same core with progressivly higher multipliers (and the top two with larger caches) - above that is the quad core stuff and they cost £500+

The step up from the 6300 is the 6600 (twice cache) but the others aren't worth it, you can acheive them by getting a decent cooler and overclocking.

thats £714

that leaves you a bit to play with,maybe spend more on the cpu and get an e6600.
