Considering asking the parents for one of these for my birthday next month.

Firstly, struggling to find a direct comparison with one of these and my current card (X800GTO) to see whether it's worth getting one for BF2 etc....

Secondly, me being a complete nub and all that, seeing as I already have all the ATI drivers n stuff on my pc already, would I just need to pull one out and shove the other in and it would all work as normal or what? :D

just bought one of these and I understand Nicey has something similar. Absolutely great card from a bang-for-bucks perspective. Driver-wise if you're on XP I'd suggest the catalyst drivers that come with the CD as the latest ones from ATI caused me no end of grief til I reverted back. However, the best drivers are always the drivers that work for you.

I only had to revert cos the newer drivers caused problems with Armed Assault, but they may well be fine with the games/apps you run.

There also Omegas and a few other reputable thrid party drivers you could try. But like I say, the ones in the box worked a treat for me. BF2 in 1280x1024 with everything on - like playing a new game again ;)

suggest you get the x1950 PRO Ultimate - only £4 more and 5% faster ;)

vs

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... ?SAP-1950P

plus there isn't much that'll need 512MB of memory on a gfx card (at least yet...).
Of course there's a bunch of DirectX10 cards on the way, but I'm gonna wait til the end of the year and the dust settles before taking that plunge (too much money for a gamble IMO)

Bought one of these for my new comp set up.

X1950 Pro 512 MB (bought AGP instead of PCI  awaiting on getting it swapped.) :D

Read the reviews for some sites, it seems that this does make a diffrence compared the older cards. :)

dunno if you saw my Graphics card thread. but anyway

My x800GTO recently broke

I installed an x1950PRO two nights ago

you're in luck as far as direct comparisson goes

Comparrison wise.

CSS - Settings on high.
i used to get 20-30 with my GTO.
i get 40-60 with my x1950

Important factor is wheter it's AGP or PCI-E.
If it's PCI-E i'd get something else.
x1950PRO is pretty much the best AGP card you'll find.

BF2, i played it for months last summer on my x800GTO.
It really doesnt make enough difference if you ask me (although i played CS on 30 fps for 2 years  )

If i didnt have to get a new card...i wouldn't have upgraded from an x800 to an x1950. The difference isn't worth £150.
You'll run BF2 fine on an X800 GTO (i did anyway)

You can get a better card for near enough the same price. (if you're on PCI-E)
Can't remember which card it is though.....i'll check for you later  8)

shrek helped me out last week with the difference between 512MB and 256MB card

Shrek wrote:
depends a bit on when you plan to replace it.

the 256 is as fast on all current games, but as the textures go up with newer games the 512 might shine through.

i would save the money. but i upgrade once a year if not sooner, so i wouldnt need the card to still be capable in 2 years time.

(and i dont know how much odds the extra memory would make in later games)

shrek

What other specs are you on??

Might be worth upgrading something else on your comp tbh

I'm on PCI-E with an AMD64 3500+ cpu with 1.5GB of ram at the mo.

Only really considering new graphics card because I don't have the money to upgrade to a better Motheboard or more upto date CPU which would also need new DDR2 ram in it. Wheres a new graphics card will go straight into any new pc I may get in the future.

Nope, in CSS anyway its CPU driven, so CPU dependent infact that with a good processor and the right settings you could get consistently good frames (i.e 70-100(excluding smokes)) with a VERY low-end card i.e GeForce FX Series. Of course GFX will be dumbed down but...

i guarantee that if you put a better cpu in and then put the gfx card in you would get better fps with the gfx card.

well then. You're PCI-E so you've got more options :D

I'd get a x1950XT
Almost the same price as an overclocked x1950PRO (maybe £5 difference)....except it's a better card :)

x1950PRO 256 around £120
x1950PRO 512 around £140
x1950PRO 512 (pre-overclocked with cooling system) around £155
x1950XT 512 around £160

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/kcp.asp?sku ... sku=327135

512MB x1950XT is a bargain tbh
