you could complile them as a local user ?

apt-get / yum / urmpi etc etc only runs as root

yeah, managed to do that...now I need to find out why irssi won't connect to anything, and screen won't start because it "Cannot access '/dev/pts/0': No such file or directory"

wont start cause you have su`d to another user :P

login as that user and screen will run

its a shared box, I'm stuck as I am, can't su at all :(

screen is installed in ~/local

still can't work out why I can't connect to an irc server, might be a firewall thing...

quite poss - the most common hack i see is a apache/php upload that installs a irc bot - might be a attempt to stop that

think I'll just stick to using this other guys server I'm currently sitting on till I get a chance to get my own dedicated...which won't be for a while :roll:
