Ok, i'm currently running on a Socket A AMD sempron 2800+ 2.0GHz.
It's holding my PC back, i still get less than 20 fps with an x1950PRO
This and my motherboard are the only things i've never upgraded since i got my PC(2 years ago). The processor is just over 3 years old now....so i think it's time to move on
Since i've never upgraded either before, it's safe to say i know nothing about it
current stuff
AGP(<--- ) ATi x1950 PRO
DDR DIMM 1GB PC3200
DDR DIMM 512MB PC2700
Any ideas on a good motherboard and processor to go with this lot???
Probably not possible with AGP???....i've no idea tbh.
Aiming at 3.0 GHz or over.
will i need a new rig?

Well I guess you don't want to upgrade your RAM to DDR2 so I'm guessing you'll stick with single core, in which case AMD is a better choice.
So go for AMD 3800+ / 4000+..
Not sure about AGP motherboards :/

I think tbh your starting to get too the point where its almost a complete upgrade. You could do the upgrade with an AGP board and keep most of your compnents, but it will be a lot less future proof.

looking at £300 cost - £100 for a processor (C2Ds should be crashing in price in a few weeks, pick any one you like), decent mobo with the 965 chipset about £50, another £100 for a PCI version of the X1950 (i think?) and £50 for 2gb of ram
sell the old card on ebay. done

No, you can get a 3Ghz chip and AGP card for very little cashola, and therefore potentially putting off a major upgrade for some time.
This is the only AGP board..
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(14521)Asrock-AM2NF3VSTA-nForce-3-250-AGP-SATA-RAID.aspx
then a cheap processor...
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(13994)AMD-CPU-AM2-Athlon-64-3200-Retail-Boxed-inc.aspx
or go up the price range some more
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productlis ... 3354&n=896
(but bare in mind the idea that at some point you will def have to upgrade everything, the question is WHEN).
It's going to be an investment of about £80 quid though, and that's £80 which is already dated and therefore "retro".
The idea of buying a whole new rig is that you won't be buying already out of date stuff, so the money/value for your money is better.
I'd buy a total upgrade, but it's upon your budget.
The card is good, it's a bugger you'll have to buy a new one.
I'll buy it off you though, if you're price is significantly low enough

To be honest, 3GHz isn't all that great, I've got a 4 month old C2D E6400, runs anything I throw at it, but it is overclocked at 2.88GHz (stable) from the stock 2.133GHz. I personally would NEVER touch a single core again, I'd even hesitate to poke it with a poopey stick.
The reason Dual Core is most peoples favorite lately, is because of the response you get whilst multi-tasking your computer. A single core tends to be slower because it's trying to work on several programs at once, whereas the Dual core will make certain programs work on certain cores from what I understand, but it's far more responsive.
As for the motherboard, I'd recommend anything thats ASUS or Gigabyte, trusted and solid brands in my honest opinion, they also usually have features for overclocking which is always nice if later you decide to make your PC run even more smooth.

Well, if you want a reasonable system, go for
I'm pretty sure that you need DDR2, but to be honest, the price isn't bad for that ram. ;P Also, I don't know what current rig you have, so I added the PSU in for the sake of wear and tear and the GFX requiring at least 450W at Full Load. Also, the stock fan for the Core 2 Duos is usually pretty crappy, but that cooler is the best bang for buck and definately better than the stock one.
elbow... no... just... no...
EDIT: Updated the list, added Graphics Cards.

dont go for the cheap option - its already low end and is a shop gap for what 6 to 12 months 18 max
seen as you have the money spend about £350 replacing ram / mobo / cpu / gfx and sell the card to markey
never buy a top end system - its only a few % faster than the 400 quid option in upgrades really
