But its Japanese, so I can only play awesome Japanese rhythm games like Beatmania and Taiko drums 
Anyone else play such games?

Does the jap version not play Pal games? I thought it would.

American and Japanese are NTSC, Europe is PAL, hence why we don't get ours the same time as America even though they have the game translated in English.

Yup. The US have NTSC-U/C (U=USA...C=Canada) & Japan has NTSC-J (J=Japan).
