ok yesterday i noticed my cpu while playing cs was around 80 degees and running at about 60-65 whilst not in game,,the problem im sure is the stock fan that came with the cpu,,pentium D,,,its a 775 socket and they are very fiddly to connect as its with no screws,just clips in,but very worrying your going to damage the mobo when clicking it into place,any today i took the side off the case and noticed the cpu fan was very wobbly so obviously not clicked in properly,,hence the high temps,i have ordered an arctic cooling freezer pro fan and same arctic silver paste,,

anyway before i took the side off my case i switched my pc on and it just turned itself off,,tried a few more times,but each time within 5-10 seconds it just switched off,,would the wobbly fan on the cpu cause this or have i damaged something yesterday while the cpu was baking in the 80 degrees heat it was running at,,

like i said it turns on so the power supply must be ok,,

Default fans are pretty decent as long as your not overclocking. The persons I was round repairing the Power Supply earlier on in the week, had a P4 which was running at 85/90 at idle which was a little high. The CPU should start throttling and slowing down at that temp. The bios had active fan management on and the target was set at 80C which hadn't been changed since it was brought. The lowest setting you can set this to was only 60C.

I've got stock fan on my Core2Duo and its currently at 100%/100% Usage with the folding at home and is only at 42C.

As for your PC, it seems like like a short or the CPU is instantly overheating and swithing the system off to protect itself. Check all the leads are clear of motherboard.

yea thats my system,the stock fan for the cpu was quite loose 1 or 2 of the locking pins had popped out so think thats why it was running so hot,(80 degrees).in the bios think the fan on cpu set at fastest and to be kept at 45 degrees i think,,
but dont understand why it keeps switching off..

Did you remove the Fan? If you did you reconnect it to the right header? Or knock something else when you where fiddling with it?

it sounds as though... either

a) your cpu is overheating and your pc is automatically turning off to prevent damage to it

b) its already damaged..

if your heatsink is broke or fan or wateva.. get a new one.. as u will need it anyway... try it then.. if it still doesn't work i'd guess ur cpu is damaged

Oh yeah did you switch the power off at the socket before you fiddled. ATX motherboards still have power going to them. Its definatley trying to protect itself from something though..

Actually I think if there was a short it wouldn't even start up.

i tried to switch it on 5/6 times when i got home,each time it switched itself off within 10 seconds,,only after disconnecting power and all leads i then took off the side and noticed cpu fan was loose,,think i will just have to wait for new cpu fan and thermal paste,,if that doesnt work,,i will probably have a fight on my hands trying to get them to change the cpu if it is faulty,as i think they say it should be fitted by a professional

you are a pro - dont let them tell u other wise and its still covered buy warranty - if it is the cpu ( doubt it ) u might have to wait upto 6 weeks though for a replacement if there twats
but here is the good thing - the contract is between u and the shop so dont let them fob u off with we have to send it to intel etc - thats bull that they try and fob u with
if it comes to that ask for it in writing and tell them they will be hereing from the trading standards as the contract is between you and them and its not your problem they sold you a defective kit and they are breaking the law

i bought it off ebuyer,i have taken the stock fan off,as it was fairly loose anyway,i have not turned it on since then,i have ordered a new heatsink and thermal paste,i dont realy want to fit the new fan and heatsink if the cpu is faulty,,is it SAFE to turn on pc without the cpu fan attached to see if everything is working or is that to risky

intel cpu`s aint like amd - me mate tried his amd and it fried in about a second
intel shoudl be ok ( not recomended ) just to see bios screen

i hold my hands up and say though i have never made a core 2 sys and read up on them so u might want a second opionion from gp or someone else like that
