Yeah, was reading this and thought that might work. Either way, I got a Samsung SATA2 SpinPoint drive... never had to install SATA drivers... not sure if its because I have a Gigabyte board or that my PC thinks its an IDE drive? Either way... I doubt it makes much difference.

depends on the SATA controller on the mobo - XP/2003 etc don't have drivers inbuilt for most.
Some controllers you can make emulate IDE controllers, these don't need drivers, others need a driver diskette installing before you can format the drive. RAID controllers usually need a driver disk before the installer progam can see the disks.

If all else fails - you can put an IDE drive in, set that to boot second (after CD)
Install the OS onto that drive, then install the mobo drivers, these will then give access to the SATA disk.
it will be a driver problem, thats all

yes - one needs to be jumpered as master, the other slave.
If your IDE cable is labelled 0 & 1 or Master & Slave, put the HDD and CD jumpers to CS (cable select) and they will sort themselves out

internet drivers arent working
but,
I found the drivers on the CD that came with the mobo. (took some looking )
so we'll see if they work
EDIT: nope they dont work either
1 last silly question
if i take the IDE hard drive from this computer(its this PCs boot drive)....and put that into the new computer with the sata hard drive.
can i skip installing an OS and just use the sata drive as a data only drive?? using this one to boot the machine....

Not without reinstalling windows, unless you are exceptionally lucky.
The windows on the IDE drive will have all the video/motherboard drivers for your old PC, the chances of getting it working with out a reload on a different mobo are quite slim...

i've done EVERYTHING you can do to try fix the problems i'm getting. nothing has worked
the only thing left is the OS. (which is 6 years old....)
So, it's looking like i'm going to have to get a new CD.
new PC is put away in the corner for now
