k, there are a few possible fixes to this, some work for some.
First, try right clicking on team fortress 2 in my games and go to properties, then pick launch parmeters.(this is the valve way of simply editing your shortcut)
Add -window to it, then hopefully you can start the game then swith to full screen once you are in.
or if still problems try adding this
-window -width 1024 -height 768 -novid -refresh 60 (just copy and paste it in) then again switch to full screen once game menu loads
also pressing tab in game to see scoreboard can also crash the game
Valve also recommend using a driver clean tool to remove the vid drivers, then upograding to latest vid drivers, but it didnt help with me,
i updated to latest drivers (ati).... and got the pc rebooting all the time..then the dreaded BSOD anyway...reverted back..and able to start tf in windowed...and then full from the panel.
