I'm kinda fed up with my current one... *cough* ZoneAlarm *cough* and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent free one?

I know AVG are just like one of if not the best Free Anti-Virus out there... but they unfortunately don't do a firewall. :(

If you use custom rules, like i do, use sygate personal firewall pro.

Its good and doesnt use alot of resources. 8)

What if you want to block applications from accessing the net, can you do it through a router?

Especially a crap one like a livebox. (which im currently using :( )

cheap routers will only block ports/IP addresses, they won't look into the packets to see what app the data came from, dearer routers will.

I generally know what all the processes running on my PCs are, and don't install anything iffy, so don't worry about firewalling outgoing stuff :D

Aye suppose, same, i tend to disable it when doing certian stuff but then enable it just as i dont really trust my routers firewall.

Its not the best of routers, have a Draytek Vigor 2800 sitting in the house but its not wireless so my flatmate can't use it.

yeah... I gots a Netgear 624v3, I never really cared about it.. just liked knowing what was trying to access the net... but I can't seem to get rid of that annoying red shield that Windows puts in the corner when you have no firewall or disable it...

Doesn't it kinda leave you exposed when port forwarding to server stuff though?

If you have no options in your router settings im guessing so, i mean when you enable DMZ for a computer it warns that you will be vunerable to attacks etc...

I open ports alot of the time, just guess that having a second firewall will protect you that bit more?

won windows firewall automatically block applications until you click "unblock" when the warning comes up?

I always keep my firewall off, dont see the need for one since almost every router has one built in, just causes problems having 2 running at the same time
