Some honest advice needed here.

Do i go for :

1) New GFX card
2) Super dooper processor
3) Windows Vista super dooper?

Current system specs:

Intel C2D 1.6ghz (overc'd 2.4ghz)
HIS ATI Radeo X1650 Pro 512
Windows XP SP2
2GB Ram

Im tempted by Vista, because evntually i'm gonna have to change over so why not now, but then a new 8800 GTS is tempting me aswell. Or even a really nice clocked C2D quad core that i read about in the latest custom PC.

if anything your gaming performance will go down - not up.

i'd up to a 1950xt if you can get your hands on one... or an 8800gts which is slightly more pricey...

the processor is half-decent in my opinion, but i believe upgrading that to a 2.6ghz wouldn't be too expensive...

Rip out half your RAM preferably badly, so yuo get a random bunch of niggling annoying faults, and you wont have to spend the money on the Vista upgrade.
What do you use the pc for a mostly anyways, if its games, possibly upgrade the GFX card.

BTW, why do most people dislike Vista so much? Alex (from DLi) has Vista Ultimate and says its a really running well.

Its a resource whore, your framerate on CSS for example, will prob drop by 20-40 unless you have an uber rig, I'm talking 4gb ram etc, or so I've heard.

If there isnt really a problem with your current system, then I wouldnt bother spending anything.

But for example, if you're getting lag in css, then figure out whats causing it and upgrade.

But, purely on your specs, gfx card gets my vote.

Well, i really want to get the best out of the games i play.

My framerate in CSS varies between about 25 and 50, on all high settings which isn't bad.

But CoD4 (which is an awesome demo) i was getting about 20 - 40 FPS on medium which is dissapointing.

However, this months custom PC has said that Windows are going to stop giving people buying new PC's the option of having XP then upgrading. Instead they're just going to issue Vista.
Worth waiting for everything to be sorted out with compatibiilty, hardware etc on Vista before getting it?

Get a X1950PRO and don't get Vista because its eyecandy... it sux for gaming.

that card is about £100 and also... Quad Core... what the hell for? Dual Core is more than enough to be honest mate.

£150 left to spend... I'd probs buy an E6600 and a Zalman Fan due to your motherboard and on the assumption you have a stock CPU Cooler.

But tbh... any C2D is probs perfectly fine, but an E6600 is just easier to overclock because of the x9 multiplier and it doesn't really need to be overclocked anyways.

lol. Also what PSU you got? If its unbranded... then get a nice branded one... Antec or my personal fav... Enermax Liberty. You'll probs want about 500-620Watt (620 Watt for expansion at later date if you get an 8800, you'll definately want at least a 620Watt)

your cpu and mobo are fine,i dont know what ram you have but if i were you i would upgrade your gfx card to one of these...

prolly get it cheaper from ebuyer.no real point in spending the money on a new cpu as you have a nice oc on yours already.

you will see a massive difference with the 640 gts over the 1950 and a 6600,especially in new games like cod4 the gts will pwn the 1950.




edit*forgot to ask about your psu but the corsair 520hx will handle your setup with any 8800 card with ease.

also you can get an OEM 8800gtx for £300.

incase we havnt already established this dont get vista, ive just built a new p.c and vista is using 40% of my 3.12gb (4gb installed but vista doesnt read it all) and each of my 4 2.4ghz cores idles at about 10%. the 8800 cards are brilliant so get the best one you can afford, the rest of your specs seem fine, maybe a slightly faster cpu when you get some more cash but nothing to worry about.

it might be worth saving abit more for the 8800gtx, mine was £340 and worth every penny. i used to have a x850xt platinum 256mb and get about 50fps on css stress test, i now get around 230fps with all settings on full at 1600*1050.

thats because nobody wants it, so they are forcing you to use it

Dell have actually gone back to using XP (or at least giving you that option)
