not vista for gaming

driver issues
incompatibility issues
resource whore

vista doesn't really offer much as far as the end user is concerned other than a pretty face

Drivers for DX9 games are fine for Vista, for DX10 though they're still a bit iffy. Having said that I've yet to see a game running in DX10 that looks or runs any better than DX9 (even Crysis doesn't look hardly any different) so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Incompatibility is a pain, I use a few audio apps that won't run under Vista, the only way round it so far is to dual boot both systems.

Yeah it is a resource whore, but it's designed to be to a certain extent (caching of apps and files etc in RAM). I have found that pretty much all games though run just as well if not better with Vista in the last few months, Crysis, FEAR, all Source games, COD4 and so on all run just as well in Vista as XP.

Yes it does look a lot prettier, and to an extent it's been made a lot more idiot proof, for me that helps as the PC is used by my 3 year old son, and things like the parental controls are brilliant and easy to set up.

I wouldn't say Vista is an essential upgrade, but it is an interesting one. If your hardware is up to 2-3 years old it should run it fine and you should be able to get the drivers etc you need.

:D

Now that would make more sense 8) If the industry press are to be believed (and they are ALL reporting it), people are buying new PCs with Vista installed and ditching it en masse to switch back to XP for the reasons outlines in the posts above.

I have no doubt that the next version of Windoze will build upon the under-the-hood changes as predicted by Chadk (not before it reaches SP2 tho' ;) ), but there's no escaping the fact that Vista is a balls up worse than Me!

But hey, this is just advice - take it or leave it :)

I agree with all the posts above, as much as it pains me, once I've backed up all my crap, I'm going back to XP.

Simply because, it runs the basics faster.

It pains me so much because XP's looks are 'horribly disfigured from an accident' in comparison to Vista's, and also Vista has some nice little features that make moving stuff around and editing files a lot easier and organising them..

*chants for SP1 to come out sooner*

i took the plunge and installed it myself. So far everything is running great and i do like the styling of everything so far. I was running XP pro fully up to date. No errors yet to report but i will do another post in 7 days letting everyone know whats happened and so forth.

Whilst I'm a terrible stats whore, I'm not a speed freak - XP does everything I want it to at what I judge to be a reasonable level of performance on what is a mid-range performing PC. On those grounds, if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Of course, because I haven't used vista I don't know what I'm missing, but I'm happy in my ignorance at the moment. Suck it and see is all I can say. Personal preference...

My thoughts as well, the only reason I've got to install it would be to learn the differences... Currently got Window Blinds on my XP and runs Vista theme fine. Anyone want it just PM me.

Theres no real reason to upgrade to Vista, if anything it effects perfomrance, and sometimes copying files on it is a major pain and seems to be a lot slower than XP, with the release of SP3 for XP I think there would be even less reason, es[ecially as SP1 for vista doesnt look like its going to make any great changes in the OS.
