Reg Hardware: Mobo maker builds 'powerless' processor cooling fan

Image

Image

"As the CPU gets hot, it causes air in a piston to expand. That pushes out the piston rod, which turns the fan rotor, pulling air over a heatpipe-fed heatsink. The heatsing [sic] helps cool the piston, so the air inside becomes more dense, pulling the piston rod back to its original position. It's a mechanism called the Stirling Engine, named after Scottish engineer Robert Stirling, who described it in 1816, though the principles on which his machine were based were uncovered in the 17th Century."

Doesn't say what processors it can cool (looks like the Northbridge in the pic), so it's anyone's guess if this bad boy can overclock... :rambo:

will the fan blow fast enough to stop it from overheating?

if it gets too warm, i don't think the piston will return again :?

i doubt if it could work on cpu's or anything overclocked :) (but then again, what do i know )

The heat would really need to be vented outside the case, the warmer the inside of the case gets the less efficient the fan is.

You'd need a large case fan to cool the interior :geek:

They have to be 60C before they even move, too hot imho. and a single cylinder is prone to get stuck at top dead centre. Risky.
