From reading around the place, I was wondering how good a PS3 would be at running online servers, for example COD4?
It has a multicore processor etc..and full linux capabilities, but how good would it be at running our servers for example?

Linux g33ks, and answer please!

They've got precious little memory, and by precious little, i mean next to none (256Mb).

Otherwise, they'd be ideal surely?

i dunno how powerfull the main processors are - it might be great at gaming but thats all the support chips doing that.
also there would be no binarys for it so would be the real sticking point

Yeah, that's the specs, but what does that relate to real world as a linux based server?
Compared to say, what we have already?

The Cell chip is good for scientific calculations (hallo Folding@home), so if you were trying to encrypt lots of stuff quickly it might be a handy appliance.

The main problem with linux on PS3 is that IIRC there isn't a wireless driver.....

Just hope the game server code is multithreaded.

@Beefy - Aye, get a nice molecule on that folding thing, does it in 8 hours on the PS3... whereas my dual core gave a 100 days i think

From what I hear, when it comes to number crunching, the cells are excellent.

However, whilst most of the posts made in the link to a forum from Slappy's post were crap, I found this link contained in the thread interesting :)

http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/jan07/4837

Really have to sift through the thread to find interesting or accurate information in the sea of speculation, fabrication - or outright talking out of asses. Some good stuff, but so much fanboy stuff it's annoying :D
