cpu i would go dual atm because most(all?) games dont support quad at the moment... so you would only be using at most 2 cores anyway.

as for graphics card... i have never used ati as i have always looked at nvidia for gaming cards and ati for more office application use... memory... if ur running XP... 2gb... with vista... 3+. but if its a mainly gaming machine... then XP it is lol

my 2 cents :)

Make sure you get the stuff from ebuyer - Always the cheapest and has the best RMA service I've ever experienced.

They also have the best delivery service too, I always use the 5 day free delivery (over £50) and it always comes within 3 working days without fail. Order Friday - Dispatched from Yorkshire to a place near me by Friday night - Delivered to me from there on Monday :D

I've got a Asus Maximus Extreme - don't get one... it only uses DDR3 which is an arm and 2 legs for any decent RAM, I'll read the spec sheet properly next time

The q6600 2.4 is a nice chip - the standard heatsink/fan is crap though

Its all running Vista 64 ultimate, with a Sapphire 3870 512MB on 2 GB and everything is sweet 8)

Yup, go for something like a Q6600, I got one and even at stock speeds there aren't any games that it struggles with, makes short work of any kind of video encoding etc as well. With a good mobo you can easily overclock to 3ghz, just need a decent cooler, usual Zalman sort of thing does the job nicely.

Besides that, 2GB RAM for 32 bit OS's or 4GB if you're going 64 bit is a good idea. As GP says stear clear of DDR3 for now, it's way overpriced and just not worth it.

For GFX, depensing on cash, something like an 8800GTS (make sure it's a G92 512mb version) or a 3870 will do fine. The 3870x2 is quite a nice piece of kit and not too pricey, however drivers can be a bit iffy. The 9800 series Nvidia cards are ok but not that outstanding compared to the 8800 series.

Example 3870:

with a swanky board like that you want the rest of the components to be good also, at least a 8800gtx if not an ultra or 9800.

The q6600 is good, i have one but not everclocked and as already says will handle most things. I read somewhere that crysis uses all 4 cores but im not sure how true that is. Crysis also wont run full spec on dual 8800gtx ultra's so u can never have enough power.

vista 64bit with 4gb of the best RAM you can afford is a must for a new gaming machine.

http://www.ebuyer.com/140324?gclid=CMyY ... MAodJTygog

what sort of psu you talking about to run sumat like this....

all in all...
asus board rampage new
6600 dual or quad core cpu new
that gfx board... new
2-4 gig mem...new...

3 hds..... 2 ide/1 sata...
.(1 dvd writer..1 cd writer)(i already have these components)

all i want to do is replace my existing mobo/cpu/gfx and memory...
and keep xp as my operating system from before...
i beleive xp will detect all the changes no problem?

asus p5k premium
2 gigs crucial ballistix
Q6600 GO
8800GTX or 3870x2 (i believe you will be running quite a high res so you need the extra mem on these cards over a 512mb g92)

8)
