Mike - Probably should get a better PSU but budget restricts it too much, and 500w is fine, would probably work fine on 400w tbh, everyone over estimates wattage. gmar - £300 the whole thing

nah seriously graphics cards in themselves these days are taking up like so much power...last 3 years their power consumption appears to have quadroupled. i had a 7900gt and both have gone up the shitter... i blame the power supply not being up to it ... and the card being shit... but a contribution of both.. most graphics cards will state they require at least 650watt psu's ... with like 12 v rails

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere yesterday that the GTX 280 will need a 550W PSU. minimum. Ah ha! here it is! http://www.tcmagazine.com/comments.php?shownews=20302

I agree that you dont scrimp on the psu, i used to get problems with cheaper psu's, unstable, crashes etc, but quality is more important then pure wattage. A good quality 500w will give you a reliable voltage which is more essential then pure power.

Aye completely agree, it's all ordered now though and it will be a good test to finally decide whether even having a £28 PSU is sufficient for a build, hopefully it will be fine otherwise it's £60+ PSU's forever I think :/
