Really interesting man, right up my street on what I wanna go into some day are they just smart NAS devices or are they more that that?

And what's all this 9PB about, what information is making up that massive size?

Also you mentioned CERN, what you guys doing with that lot am I right in thinking they're the bunch of physicists doing the LHC?

Too many questions.

much more than NAS , infact the celerra is the NAS front end only to the storage
these are SAN devices so there block level rather than file level devices and for the first time we are going to use virtual provisioning to dynamically compensate for storage (something i dont want to do because of the potential iops hit ) - read up about it if your interested as its to much for here. then on top of that we also have CAS as well

we have a 2000 core supercomputer in one of out datacentres for a cern project proccessing data and yes it will proccess stuff from the LHC when it gets going. it generates alot of data and hence the need for some of these
http://www.emc.com/products/detail/hard ... el-960.htm
upto 9PB has been quoted although with budgit cuts i doubt it will ever get that much

So basically you have the celerra as the NAS and your gonna be using high performance disks on these servers that are virtually provisioned? But the servers arent gonna be as fast so the iops will drop since its over a network?

Sorry if that made no sense lol, didn't realise is was as complicated as this.

Still damn interesting though.

How much power does that thing consume, must be mad?

Also that guy that did the TV program on the LHC, does he work at manchester uni?

CAS? Hmmm, what does Wikipedia say:

Cas may mean:

* CaÅŸ, a type of cheese made in Romania
* Cas (people), an ancient people near the Caspian Sea
* Cas Guava (Psidium friedrichsthalium), a species of guava that grows in Costa Rica
* Calcium sulfide (CaS), a chemical compound
* Cassiopeia (constellation), standard astronomical abbreviation
* Castleford, a common abbreviation for the town in West Yorkshire, UK

I'm going for the cheese....

yup

we just use standard enterprise ATA disks for the NAS in raid groups.
for this tier of SAN normally we controll how this is done to span disks how we want to max out the spindel count etc but when the disks are virtually provisioned you cant do this and hence the usual iops drop
the tier 1 storage is all fiberchannel DMX stuff

Quote:
But the servers arent gonna be as fast so the iops will drop since its over a network?

bit about iops above, the network is dedicated 2gb ( about to be 8gb ) fiber so there is no bottleneck there. where you really see the benifits are on servers with massive amounts of IO + your not constrained to pre built disk arrays in the server that once built cant be added to, doing it this way using LVM you can dynamically reallocate storage
man all that with a hangover

beefy - suprised you aint come accross CAS - Content-addressable storage
used to store xrays etc . write once read many times

Ah, yes - our PACS system probably works along those lines. In fact, most aspects of medical records could work that way. Something that needs to be implemented on our theatre system, which currently stores all op notes on the C: drive of the server :?
