i have my drive partitioned 50gig and 450ish gig C: and D: respectivally
my question is if i install windows 7 RC onto my C: drive can i access the files on the D: partition from windows 7 then once i have the files i need format it from within windows?
or will installing a new os mess with my partitions meaning i need to back up over 300gig of stuff?

Well the Master Boot Record (MBR) is created when you create the first partition on the hard disk so I wouldb't have thought it would make no difference whatever NTFS supporting OS whether it be XP, Vista or Windows 7.
Theres always a minimal risk whenever you install a new OS though.
