Meh. Windoze 7 Pro x64. Auto update demanded a shutdown, which I duly did. Ever since, the Windows animated boot logo does it's thing, then all I get is a black screen on both of my monitors and a very lonely mouse pointer

Have unsuccessfully tried:

    Safe Mode (same result)
    Boot to Command Prompt
Hitting shift 5x to get sticky keys up
Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Escape to get Task Manager running
    Ctrl+Alt+Delete
    Pressing F5 5x
    Windows key+P
    Startup repair
    System Restore
    Removing all event log files
Using regedit to check there's a correct shell entry
^ ^ ^ ...to check network services are running properly

Tether, meet end of :(

Has anybody got any ideas? :bookworm:

I've had that on XP, got dual set-up and it was the HDMI on the main monitor gone wrong in my case, using D-subs on both and its fine now. Have you tried taking the second monitor off and see if it will boot.

My guess though is its a corrupt file which windows is hanging on  Are you using AVG and have you tried the pressing the Shift button 5 times at the start?

I reinstalled Windows in the end, all my data is on my flaky RAID array, so no worries there.

fecking Intel RAID controllers - on my old nVidia motherboard I could use ordinary desktop disks no problem. With Intel, the disks keep corrupting for no apparent reason. Turns out that the contorller is designed for a 15 second error check on a RAID disk and not the 2 minutes of a desktop disk  I need to replace all of my disks for RAID to work properly  I think a couple of NAS enclosures will take care of my now redundant disks :bookworm:
