specifically for bf3 since I hear the sound is so good......
I've read a few people saying 5.1 and 7.1 a gimmick?
will be using onboard sound on my new asrock extreme new gen motherboard...
how much should I really spend?
Currently have a senheiser headset but it's over 5 years old easily so will I see a huge benefit in buying a new one?

I think I have PC151 headset from 2006

well what I am suspecting is that if you're a real audiophile (no paedo) that you would have to recommend stereo sennheiser headset for about £120....+ a soundcard.........
whereas if you're on a budget then it might be better to spend about £60-90 for a surround sound headset.....
I'm reluctant to fork out even more money so I might just avoid purchasing all together and make do with my current sennheiser stereo headset until it brakes or I get bored.

I have some Creative Fatal1ty ones but theres quite a few different ones now but your headset should be fine if you really want something different get these (Lur pointed them out to me couple weeks back ...Awesome can't afford though) http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/608494/Logitech-Z-5500-Digital-Speakers/Product.html

i use audiotechnica stereo audiophile cans, they're around 80-135 pounds depending on where you look Audiotechnica ATH AD700they're open backed ones though, so you might want to go for the closed ones ( ATH-A700) for a bit more bass or when you don't want any sound leaking (not that they leak that much). i do run an asus xonar d2x sound card as well, so not sure how much of a difference using the onboard one will make in sound quality.

This is what I need to find out i am in some disbelief that an expensive mobo can't just handle sound as a sound card these days......seemed like an obvious step forward to me

So yea after asking the geeks on over clockers they say onboard mobo sound is always shit and u need a decent sound card + decent stereo. Headset
They disagree as to what a decent sound card is but they seem to suggest creative have shit drivers ....
And that you want one with dedicated memory to offload useage from CPU ....x-fi they said...the is - next gen shit coming out soon that looks as if it's worth waiting to buy....
